This is a class to learn the fundamental skills of creating with clay for beginners of all ages. We cover the basic methods of creating: pinch pots, coil building, slab construction and throwing and trimming cylinders, bowls and plates on the wheel. Ceramics 1 students also learn the cycle of clay, studio maintenance and glazing techniques.
We spend the first several weeks learning a new technique just about every week! After each student has had time to dabble in all of the areas, students are set free to reflect and chose the methods they enjoyed the most and found the most success. They will spend the remaining class time creating a cohesive body of work, which will be on display at the end of the semester Art Show!
Following Ceramics 1, students who want to continue to develop their skills would need a recommendation for Ceramics 2.
